Top Tip

When reading and building your commercial awareness, try to think further and beyond the story. For example these are some of the questions that I ask:

  • Who are the players in this story and what businesses and industries are affected by this news?
  • Taking the first bullet point into account, how does this change or development affect how a business might operate?
  • If a law firm was serving this type of business/client what does this change mean in relation to the type of work that the firm may end up doing?
  • Use the PESTLE method to analyse what you are reading by asking: yourself “what is the Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental impact of this development? This framework is a strategic tool for understanding market growth or decline, business position, potential and direction for operations.
